Sports in New York City present a distinguished history and few historic sports venues namely,
the original Yankee Stadium and the home of the New York Yankees that was introduced from 1923 to 2008.
New York City also hosted parts of World Cup of Hockey in 1996 and Goodwill Games of 1998. However,
in 2005 it bid for 2012 summer Olympics, but lost the bid to London.
Sports in the city
The New York City Sports that is closely followed is the baseball and the three cities of the baseball teams include New York with Los Angeles and Chicago.
The Major baseball teams are the New York Mets and New York Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers. The New York Giants are now the San Francisco Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers the Los Angeles Dodgers. There are two minor baseball teams, the Brooklyn Cyclones and the Staten Island Yankees.
The New York City also represents the National Football League by the Buffalo Bills, New York Jets and New York Giants.
The only NFL team is the Buffalo Bills to play their home game within the New York State, while the New York Jets and the Giants play in New Meadowlands Stadium, New Jersey adjacent to the New York City. This stadium will host in 2014 the Super Bowl XLVIII.
The National Hockey League is represented by the New York Rangers. New York City sports also include soccer represented by the New York Red Bulls.
These Red Bulls play their home games in New Jersey, in their own new stadium. The Basketball Association team in the nation of men’s is the New York Knicks and the women’s is the New York Liberty. The first basketball championship was held in 1938 in New York and the semifinal and finals were within the city.
Hosting of events
The New York City supports and promotes many events being a global city. The Grand Slam tournaments, the U.S. Tennis Open are hosted in the Queens.
The marathon in the New York City is the largest and holds top three places in the 2004-2006 marathons, besides having large numbers of finishers. Boxing is also a popular sport of this city and events such as Amateur Boxing Golden Gloves are held every year at Madison Square Garden.
Many sports are related to the immigrant communities of New York.
A street version of baseball is Stickball and this was popularized by the working class youths in German, Italia and Irish neighborhoods in 1930s. Moreover, recently many amateur cricket leagues have come from Caribbean and South Asia with other immigrants.
